Furloughed but not forgotten

Many businesses have taken advantage of the Government’s furlough scheme, to receive some financial support during these challenging times. With the furlough portal (Coronavirus Retention Scheme) going live, should we now be looking at ways to support those staff members that have been furloughed? Indeed, they are still part of the team and will, hopefully be back to normal working in the near future.

We have received a number of requests for advice from clients on the subject of whether training can continue for employees who have been furloughed. There certainly has been some mixed messages about the subject, so we thought it would useful to understand what we can and can’t do as responsible employers.

The bottom line is that furloughed employees are able to engage in training, as long as doing so does not provide services to, or generate revenue for, or on behalf of their company. This means that furloughed staff could (if they choose) use the time whilst furloughed to continue their own Continued Personal Development and learn new skills.

Where training is undertaken at the request of their employer, furloughed employees are entitled to be paid at least their appropriate national minimum wage. In most cases, the furloughed payment of 80% of an employees regular wage, up to the value of £2,500, will be sufficient to cover these training hours.
